How to maintain a carbon clincher wheel

Sep 14 , 2021

You will be surprised at how light carbon products or parts are. However, when you ride a bike equipped with carbon fiber split pliers wheels, a real surprise will appear. The "miracle" lightweight carbon material transfers most of your physical strength directly to the ground under your feet, and its control level, comfort and acceleration will amaze you. This will definitely be different from what you have experienced before.

When you are buying a carbon fiber bicycle product, please take some time to visit the Bicycle Industry Australia (BIA) website. BIA is the highest institution for the entire bicycle industry in Australia, aiming to promote ethical business and trade business practices in the bicycle industry.

General bicycle maintenance

Even though carbon fiber bicycle parts have amazing strength, toughness and power, a careless behavior can cause serious damage to your bicycle to a certain extent. This is because carbon has some very different properties and characteristics compared to other carbon elements such as steel, titanium or even aluminum, and these elements and characteristics may have been ridden before.

In contrast, carbon is basically a composite synthetic material made of unique and different fibers. For this particular reason, your new carbon gemstone is composed of a super-strong fabric and requires some fresh knowledge from you.

Safety First!

For your carbon fiber rims, please make sure to use only specific types of brake pads recommended by the product manufacturer in accordance with Australian safety standards AS 1927-1998 and 2014 road traffic regulations.

Prevent flattening

For flat shoes, it is not recommended to ride on flat tires. For carbon fiber rims, it becomes even more important because it can easily damage your wheels because their high sidewalls will delaminate when in contact with the road surface for a long time.

Therefore, ensure that your tire inflation is always at the optimal level. Use only plastic tire levers when fixing any tire vents to prevent the metal rim from damaging the carbon rim.

The Tubular Wheels

For tubular carbon fiber wheels that must be glued to the tire, use steel wool to gently scratch the rim to confirm that the rim is ready. This will clean and wear them slightly.

When tires stay on the rim for a long time, they may get stuck and difficult to remove, which can easily damage your carbon fiber rim.

Taking Care Of Spokes

On any bicycle wheel, the spokes can become loose, and they should be checked regularly for optimal tension levels. Because the rims of carbon fiber wheels are high and hard, it may not be easy to notice when your spokes are loose. Therefore, regularly check the spoke tension by squeezing them.

Bicycle Rack Strapping

If you need to tie your bike to any frame, place a cushion on the rim to ensure that the belt used will not cut and scrape into the carbon fiber rim.

Repair And Replacing Parts

Damaged or collided bicycle wheels show obvious signs of damage, such as chips, cracks, loose fibers or fatigue marks, and should be stopped immediately and inspected to ensure that they are still safe to use. Bicycles sold in Australia must meet the mandatory standards set out in the Australian and New Zealand standards (AS/NZS 1927:1998).
